Ivars Gravlejs
(b. 1979, Riga) is Latvian artist and Assoc. Prof. at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic). He studied photography at the Academyof Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague from 2000 to 2007. He later earned a PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU) in Prague. During his studies at FAMU, Gravlejs shifted his focus from documentary photography to a conceptual approach, leading to the creation of project Early Works. This project was published by MACK and exhibited at Tate Modern gallery in London. His project Unknown Latvian Photography, which offers a fictional evaluation of the work of non-existent Latvian photographers within the historical context of the 20th century, became part of the collection at the Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga. After completing studies, Gravlejs worked for a year on the subversive project My Newspaper. As a photojournalist for one of the major Czech newspapers, he subtly manipulated reportage photographs before they got published in the newspaper. Gravlejs currently resides in Berlin, collaborating with Ukrainian artist Kateryna Berlova as an artistic duo Dirty Romantics. Gravlejs works in various media, including photography, video, installation, and performance.
